What Is Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Why Is It So Important?

What’s the big deal about sulfate-free shampoo? We’re sure you’ve seen ads in lots of places using the buzzwords “Sulfate-Free”. Let’s take a closer look….

Sulfate-free shampoos are those that don’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. These two commonly used sulfates are great cleaning agents, but also very harsh on the hair and scalp. While these chemicals can leave your hair squeaky clean, they can also deplete the hair and scalp of moisture. In addition, they can leave your hair feeling dry, rough, frizzy and strip your color. Not exactly the results you should be looking for in a shampoo!

Sulfate-free shampoos are mainly made of plant derivatives, making them good for you, your hair and the environment. Most importantly though, sulfate-free shampoo is excellent for preserving your color, taming frizz and maintaining healthy moisture balance in the hair and scalp. If you suffer from rosacea, eczema, contact dermatitis or other skin problems, sulfate-free shampoo might be a great alternative for you.

So how do you know if your shampoo is sulfate-free? Watch for labels that contain any one of these ingredients:

•Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

•Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

•Parabens

•Phthalates

•Triethanolamine (TEA)
